Maybe you ought to differentiate a lot clearer exactly what you mean by your words and research your imagery. You are correct, the image is of Mary, specifically the immaculate heart of Mary.
Yes, the imagery of the bible in times past is beautiful. It is so because of those "ridiculous people" who actually believed in God and devoted their lives to what was written within the bible, so much so that they spent hours and years creating such imagery for others to enjoy and see the beauty within.
And contrary to popular belief, she did not remain a virgin for the entirety of her life. The Bible clearly states that Jesus had brothers. Also, archaeologists found one of his brother bone boxes, back in ...2002 was it? *memory fart, sorry*
